Home Sweet Home Talk Story feature, Maui No Ka Oi Magazine, Winter 2004

Hear that?   A gentle strumming coming from Kapalua; sweet, soulful riffs mixed with laughter and melody? Ki ho’alu, Hawaiian slack-key guitar, has come home, thanks to a new concert series celebrating this and other Hawaiian musical traditions: ‘ukulele, steel guitar, and leo ki’e ki’e(falsetto singing.) “Home” is an intimate, 120-seat amphitheater at the Ritz Carlton, Kapalua–a room that lends itself perfectly to the cozy ambiance that host George Kahumoku, Jr., creates. Kahumoku, proclaimed the “Hawaiian Renaissance Man,” perfectly melds music, talking story and laughter into an old-fashioned, “feel good” experience. He shares the stage with his talented son, Keoki, and with Hawaiian music masters Cyril Pahinui, Ledward Ka’apana and Dennis Kamakahi.

Master guitarists like Cyril Pahinui (son of the legendary Gabby Pahinui), Ledward Kaapana, Brother Noland and George Kuo are slated to join Kahumoku for slack-key music and to talk story in a carefree format reminiscent of the traditional Hawaiian backyard music and story sessions held with friends and relatives. Occasionally, the concert will showcase ukulele, steel guitar and falsetto musical artists.

These acclaimed musicians have performed around the globe, but they say they love playing at home.
